Sponsor an Injured Greyhound
GreySave's United States Homecoming location is about 140 miles from the Caliente Race Track in Tijuana, Mexico. One hundred percent of the greyhounds racing at the Caliente track are American born and registered through the National Greyhound Association in Kansas. Since we are relatively close to the Caliente track, we traditionally have gotten greyhounds right from the track. When the Florida race tracks closed at the end of '20, many of the greyhounds from the Florida tracks and from greyhound farms moved to the Caliente track. That migration almost doubled the number of greyhounds racing in Mexico. GreySave works with the Caliente kennel operators to pick up retired and injured hounds and bring them back to the U.S. for adoption.
Just like with any other greyhound track, some of those skinny-legged speed hounds get injured, mostly broken back legs, but some front legs, feet and toes. The year '21 was not an exception although one difference is that the broken hounds seemed to come in clusters of three or four at a time. Given that, earlier this year, we realized we would soon be overwhelmed both financially and for housing these injured hounds. Since we can only use the limited number of foster homes that are located near the orthopedic vet group, we reached out to other groups who could no longer get greyhounds.
First we found a group about seven hours from us that could share in the responsibility of taking in some of the broken hounds. Then we reached out to groups located all around the U.S. that could share in covering some of the orthopedic costs.
In California, the veterinary costs for a broken hound ranges from $4,000 to $9,000. For a greyhound with an older/chronic fracture that is not quite healed but needs a splint for stabilization, meds and a weekly bandage change costs from $2,000 to $3,500. However, to surgically repair broken bones like hocks, (the most common type of break) or less commonly front leg breaks or feet it costs between $6,000 and $9,000. Over the years, 20% to 25% of the hounds have been injured, but this year with all the new greyhounds moving from Florida and young inexperienced hounds coming from the farms, there seems to be more than the usual amount of injuries.
Please help us acknowledge and thank the super groups that are helping us!
The group working with us to take about half of our broken hounds is Greyhound Pets of AZ in Clarksdale, AZ.
And the amazing groups that dug deep into their treasury and sponsored/paid the veterinary bills for our hounds are:
Central Illinois Greyhound Adoption in Perkin, IL
Virginia Greyhound Adoption Group (VAGA) in Mechanicsville, VA
And here is where you come in!
You don't have to be an adoption group to help a hound in the care of a hound. To become a Sponsor to one of our broken hounds contact [email protected] or 626-354-8476 and see how you can help.
Or If you want to help a broken hound but are not ready to sponsor one please make a donation to the GreySave Benefactors fund at page www.greysave.org/benefactors-fund.html. All donations to the Benefactor's fund goes directly to the medical needs of our ill or injured hounds.
The happy and healing hounds!!
