GreySave Benefactor Fund for 2022
Your donation to GreySave's Benefactor's Fund will go directly to the medical needs of our injured and ill greyhounds.
Check out how some of the hounds you helped are spending their retirement.
Benefactor's Fund update -- In 2021 GreySave has brought 35 hounds with either injured legs and/or feet or with medical issues that needed significant veterinary care. The medical hounds represented 30% of the total number of greys that we took in from the track and/or other sources. That time frame has also turned out to be the most expensive time period for veterinary costs we have ever experienced. Some of the reasons are that the speciality group we use for orthopedic, emergency, heart and internal medicine related issues was bought out, revised its pricing structure and cut a 1/5 off our discount. Then Covid-19 hit causing the local vets we used for spay/neuters and dentals to change their office procedures, restrict some services and in some cases increase their prices. The cost to get the medical issue hound ready for their Forever Home over that time period ranged from $4,000 to $12,000 each with an average cost of $6,500.
Why does GreySave take in injured hounds. Because we have the opportunity to bring them home since we are only 3 hours and one international border crossing from the Caliente track and because we strongly believe that every greyhound deserves a retirement in a loving home. If you could get them to wake up long enough to give you an answer what they think of their new lives I believe they all would agree that they LOVE their new lives.
Why does GreySave have a benefactor's fund? The original reason was that early on GreySave realized that we were one of the few adoption groups that could get greyhounds fresh from their racing careers and also that some of these athletes were coming in with injuries or maybe an illnesses. Since we wanted to bring them home, no matter their medical condition and to get them the best care we could we needed more donations than the $350 adoption fee, Meet and Greet donations and two annual events could bring in. At that point we determined we needed a separate source of funding for their medical costs. Hence, we started the Benefactor's fund and quickly discovered that GreySave’s hounds had many friends in the community and that those friends would gladly help the greyhounds in a special way, financially.
Today, as right from the start of this fund, 100% of the Benefactor’s donations are used to pay for the costs of the broken leg and other injured retired greyhounds.

GreySave adopts between 100 to 125 greyhounds a year and as with any other athletes a certain portion of them have been injured and more recently some have been sick. We know from experience between 20 and 30% of our greyhounds come in with medical issues that cost significantly more that your average new retiree. Once GreySave gets an injured or sick dog into our care we believe in taking good care of them, whatever it takes and then moving them on to loving Forever homes.
GreySave’s historically gets their hounds from the Caliente racetrack in Tijuana Mexico. All the hounds that come to us are US born and raised and are registered by the National Greyhound Association in Kansas.
GreySave takes in all greyhounds that come our way, whether they are sick or healthy, old or young, broken legged or not! We do not look for a specific gender or color or the healthiest or the cutest. We just take the dogs that are waiting for us at the track on GreySave's Homecoming Day. Every greyhound comes to us as a medical mystery - they come to us “as is". We don't get any veterinary information on them. Homecoming day is always a busy one as our experienced volunteer team tries to assess the new kids and determine if they need any special medical care. Thankfully, most don't need extra help for breaks and illness, so they can start their new life in a greyt foster home that very day.
This fund is for the others, the less fortunate who need more!
