Artemis (Springwater Lydia)
January 27, 2004 - July 31, 2018
Our Artemis turned 14-1/2 last week and has been experiencing heart trouble as well as other age-related ailments for over a year. This hasn't stopped her from enjoying a (short, slow) romp in the yard followed by parading a tennis ball around the other dogs as they continued to run. Since having a rabies vaccination last week, however, she took a turn for the worse, and this afternoon (July 31, 2018) we had to say good-bye to our gentle red fawn Greyhound goddess.
Artemis’ racing name was Springwater Lydia. She came off the track at just over 2 years old. We named her Artemis after the Greek goddess of the hunt. She had a sweet, quiet, retiring personality and often looked a lot like a deer. Around age 9, she passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen and BARK Reading Dog certifications. She visited schools and libraries for a couple of years before age caught up with her. Jim and I, as well as Diana, Adonis, and Marcus, will greatly miss our beloved Artemis. ~ Bonnie

Emmett (Emmett’s Chain)
September 20, 2004 - June 2, 2017
Emmett (Greysave #280) passed away a few months shy of his 13th birthday, after courageously battling osteosarcoma. Emmett was my first greyhound, and first dog as an adult. I was so excited to bring him home eight years ago! I didn’t know much about greyhounds then, but Emmett was a gentle teacher even as I asked him to adjust to a setting that was a sharp departure from his racing life, which had taken him from Phoenix to Caliente. A handsome fawn boy with velvety-soft fur and soothing presence, Emmett drew a lot of attention. But, he was equally willing though to lavish it on other dogs, comically even the small, fluffy ones. Things, however, would go to a whole new level if we saw another grey. His neatly folded ears would suddenly hoist themselves into perfectly rigid triangles. Some years later, I was pleased to add a young grey girl (Bialy) to our family but this habit never changed. Emmett was my constant companion and friend. In these short hours after his passing, I still see him in my mind’s eye, lying peacefully on his bed. Thank you Cathy and, Steffenie, his foster mom, for entrusting me with this treasure. ~ Jeffrey

Andy (BB He Dip)
July 13, 2004 - April 27, 2017
Andy came into our lives 8.5 years ago. As we began to grow our family of Greys, it was quickly apparent that Andy was the “gentle” pack leader, whom all looked up to. We saw him as a blessing with his intelligence and calming manner. He was so wise, alert and dialed into his pack and humans. Many people commented that with Andy being a large fawn with soft velvet ears that always were erect he looked like Bambi. He had a perpetual smile, but sounded like Eeyore the donkey when he wanted something. Andy traveled and endured a full race career beginning in Florida, on to Louisiana, then to Arizona, and finally ending in Caliente before he found us and blessed us. On April 27, 2017 after his morning stroll in the backyard he came inside laid down and began to gasp. With his head in his Mama’s lap hearing her voice, he began he journey across the Rainbow Bridge. Andy over-filled our hearts with such joy, love and companionship. He has left such a void in our hearts. But we will always be more grateful than words could express for our Andy Bambi Boy ~ Marcy and Geoff

Misty (All Aflutter)
March 29, 2004 - April 23, 2017
On April 23rd a second greyhound girl, who was not usually out in the GreySave spotlight suddenly died. Her name was Misty. She was a brindle girl and proudly wore GreySave's tag 275. She was very special girl not only for her sweet and loving personality but also because of the life she had lived before she came to GreySave. Misty's story -- GreySave received a call on 3/28/09 that there was a greyhound in the Baldwin shelter and that she had recently had puppies! Jay and Stephenie Shields & I met there and retrieved her. Misty was so scared but Jay & Stephanie lovingly took her home. We quickly discovered that she had tattoos, her track name was All Aflutter and she had not raced in over 2 years, 852 days to be exact! So where had she been? She came from the Caliente track and had an unfixed broken leg. Her Achilles tendon was still connected to the broken calcaneus bone and it moved every time she walked. Ouch! Not only that, the shelter believed that she had been used in the pit bull industry to breed pit puppies that would be docile. All this was too horrible to imagine but a couple weeks later we got that confirmation from a local pet store worker that said Misty's owner came in complaining that his pit pup's greyhound mother had escaped and he needed some dog formula. Go Misty! That day at Baldwin Park shelter a 5 year old Misty found her Forever Home and she has been with Jay & Stephenie ever since. On Sunday she had a catastrophic back or neck event and lost her life. She was just over 13. Rest in Peace sweet Misty. You were so special and proved daily that dogs can forgive and forget! ~ Jay and Stephanie

Abigale (Bacs Mc Babe)
November 16, 2002 - April 23, 2017
Today we said goodbye to Abigale, she of the indomitable spirit and an abundance of attitude, just a few days short of the one-year mark since she was diagnosed with osteo. For the past 12 and a half years she brought us joy and love and amusement, and even living under the shadow of osteo she was the same old Abigale, insisting on her twice-daily walks and jumping into the back of our car if we let our guard down. We're profoundly grateful that we had so much quality time with her after the diagnosis and that her time of suffering was minimal. She was 14, a puppy to the very end. ~ Cathy and Alan Kiburtz

Sophie
2003 - April 7, 2017 & Charlotte 2004 - April 7, 2017
We lost both Sophie (red brindle, 14 1/2) and Charlotte (black and white, 13) on the same day, April 7, 2017. Charlotte's passing was sudden, but Sophie had been fighting both lymphoma and laryngeal paralysis for a couple years. Our girls bonded from the moment they met at a Spa day, although both came from the same track. Sophie was a very spooky girl when she came to us, so afraid of us that we had to leave the room or she wouldn't eat. Charlotte was the total opposite with a big, happy, friendly personality, and she was instrumental in helping Sophie come out of her shell. She taught Sophie to play, showed her that it was o.k. to trust the humans as well as to sleep on the sofa. Charlotte brought out the loveable goof in Sophie. And since Charlotte always had to be the first one out the back door into the yard, she went first to wait for Sophie on the other side. Joe and I miss these incredible beings beyond measure. Their departure leaves a gaping, empty space in our home, but we’re so grateful they were a part of our family ~ Kristina Krause

Pickle Pants
2002 - February 5, 2017
When we adopted Pickle Pants, over nine years ago, she was afraid of men and afraid to be alone but with a little work and understanding she turned out to be a perfect dog with an amazing personality. She never raced, so we are not sure how old she was, but the doctor said she was 14-15 years old. She started to slow down a few months ago, and on February 5 2017, we knew it was time for her to go, An hour before the vet came to our house, she got up and was ready for her last walk one of her favorite things to do. Our hearts still ache for her.
Goodbye, our sweet Pickle ~ Vicky, Ricki, George and Mini Man

Sweet Caroline (Sport Bluebonnet)
May 26, 2005 - January 25, 2017
Our little Caroline, known in her professional life as Sport Bluebonnet, was freed from her greyhound duties as bed-monitor. She was a tough girl who, at 11, had been fighting health issues for quite some time. She put up a valiant fight, but she was no match for the illness that made her so frail. We talked with her and she told us that setting her free from her failing body was the best thing we could do for our beautiful, quirky, tiny girl, so is was time for her to journey across the Bridge.
She passed away, surrounded by love and family on the spot where she loved to lounge. Sweet Caroline, you have left a huge hole in our hearts. May you rest in peace. ~ Cathy & Alan

Sweet Cindy
April 16, 2004 - December 25, 2016
I’m saddened to report that Sweet Cindy, age 12.5, passed peacefully and comfortably from this world in the 1am hour on Christmas morning. Feeling well, we had gone for a walk on Christmas Eve day and Cindy ran a figure-8 in the front yard that evening. She had eaten dinner and drunk water. Then she was gone.
Waking to her gasps of surprise (and maybe a call for help?), I caressed her lightly, spoke words of reassurance, placed my ear on her ribs and could hear her heart racing. She was gone in a minute or two. Not being medically trained, I guessed that it was a heart attack. Her doctor later said it could have been a blood clot. Fast, with minimal stress … it went as well as it could have. To pass so quickly and peacefully was a blessing. SC retired from the race track with a broken hock and came into our lives at age 5. I’m grateful for the 7 years we shared, the comfort and companionship we provided each other, and every moment we spent together.
Based on her time of departure, I like to think Santa Claus picked her up on his way through town. ~ Pam

My Lady Love
March 24, 2007 - December 9, 2016
My Lady Love responded to her racetrack name so we couldn’t change it and we shortened it to “Lady Love” or just “Lady.” We forgot what we sounded like in public yelling “Lady! Lady, come on now!!” Heads would turn. People glared until they saw Lady and immediately fawned all over her. We never changed Lady’s name but she loved to change herself and try new things. She was a quiet girl but one day she came home from daycare with a full-throated, deep-chested bark and suddenly became our guard dog, on high alert for defenseless postal workers and garbage collectors. She managed to get us to bring her to work with us, trudging alongside with a spring in her step and a serious look on her face about the day of work ahead. She deliriously bounced up and down like a kangaroo before every walk, and one day she added a solid jab to her routine, punching Sarita right in the gut. Hers was such a young, innocent, and exposed soul, and she was still learning about life when we lost her. But she was the one to teach us so much every single day. ~ Sarita & David

Bialy (Mega Bialy)
December 30, 2011 – December 3, 2016
Bialy originally came to us when I was looking for a companion for my older grey Emmett. An energetic girl of 2 1/2, Bialy did not disappoint, quickly establishing herself as the queen of our home, despite still healing from a broken hock. Bialy made a name for herself around our neighborhood too, beautiful on the inside as the outside. She always had a ready lean for almost everyone we met during our walks, looking back as if to say “I hope this is ok”. Of course, it was Bialy! The only exception to her rule was skateboarders -- but at times, those throaty barks emanating from this beautiful brindle girl were very welcome! Among the many things she loved were her big brother Emmett, greeting guests with a wiggle on the rug, facing down squirrels in the park, meal and sleeping time (of course), and running through my condo for no other particular reason other than to express joy. And although Bialy left us too soon, she knew that she was loved by many. Thank you Sue Blair (her foster mom) and Greysave for allowing me the privilege of having this special spirit in my life. ~ Jeffrey

Queenie Eye
June 06, 2011 - October 31, 2016
My darling Queenie was surprisingly shy when she joined our family. She had just turned 3. It took her just 30 days to blossom into a happy, loving, silly and sometimes naught girl. She loved exploring our property. She adored toys and playing with her sisters and brothers. She was the perfect roacher and loved treats. Any toy or shoes left outside didnt last long, Queenie thought everything belongs inside. She was so proud of herself and would prance around with my sandal. She rooed like a coyote, did zoomies at meal times and danced with me every morning in the bathroom while i got ready. She was pure sunshine. Im thankful she was able to enjoy Big Bear lake, a weekend in Idyllwild and the GS picnic in resent weeks. We adored our Queenie and she no doubt loved her life with us. She showed us her happiness and joy everyday. ~ Kerry

Essy (Atomic Essence)
January 27, 2010 - August 10, 2016
I fell in love with Greycie and GusGus my greyhound grand dogs and accompanied them to GreySave events. At Oktoberfest 2013 I had no plans to adopt when I fell in love with this sweet-faced red greyhound eagerly licking my hand. Atomic Essence was her racing name, she was three, and she stole my heart. On November 2 Essy entered her home and forever became part of my family. Essy quickly trained me to be her mom and was the perfect companion. She loved playing, taking walks, snuggling on the couch, and other dogs. When meeting a dog on our walks after the initial doggie formalities, she inevitably assumed the play position. If any dog cried or seemed distressed, Essy would want to give a comforting lick or snuggle. She loved her stuffies and often slept with one. In fact she loved anything soft! I bought an outside cot for her and she avoided it until I covered it with one of her blankets. Her diagnosis in the fall of 2015 of hemangiosarcoma came as a shock but she bravely lived the last year of her life as the same wonderful grey she had always been. At the Race to the Park Essy chose Charlotte to share our home. The week before she left us, she still found the strength to play. Essy died in my arms. ~ Judith

Merley
June 08, 2008 - July 18, 2016
After the sudden death of my first greyhound my husband and i decided to adopt again right away. I was excited to meet Merley, but was still heart broken from my loss of Jetta. I remember sitting and waiting to see Merley when this happy jumping and prancing beautiful boy ran straight to me and nearly into my lap. It was at that moment he was to be my new best friend. My husband always said, "I've never seen a dog more in love with his human." Merley loved to greet me at the gate when i drove up and would spin with excitement. He roooed and loved to do zoomies. He could look into my eyes and make me feel as loved as i love him. Unfortunately his time with me wasn't long, but he was loved a lifetimes worth and he saved me when i needed him the most. ~ Kerry

Oswald Steelpot
May, 6 2005 - January 23, 2016
Oswald was the most handsome red brindle boy we had ever seen. He was a big boy with a deep & loud bark that would make your ears ring. His caramel-colored eyes were the windows to his sweet soul. Oswald was always Mr. happy-go-lucky who loved to go on his daily walks, play hide-n-seek in the house, assist in the kitchen as a sous chef, and even help with the dishes. He knew which cupboard in the kitchen that held his treats, he recognized the sound of our SUV’s when we pulled in the driveway, and he knew when someone opened up a closet door in the bedroom to grab a pair of “magic shoes”, it meant that it was time for a walk! His favorite weekend event was the Sunday morning coffee and donut hole run. Oswald loved donut holes. He would wait with perked up ears for someone to come home with the donut holes. Oswald was popular in our neighborhood and lots of cute little fluffy dogs liked him. He stood strong and tall but had a soft spot for the little girls. Oswald loved the Greyhound event trips to Solvang and Idyllwild and play dates with other Greyhounds. Thank you for the great memories. We had to say goodbye to our big boy Oswald and it was much too soon. He was 10 ½ years old, with the most handsome grey face and beautiful sweet soul. We have a huge hole in our hearts, a huge hole in our lives and sadness inside. We wanted Oswald to live forever. He was our very special boy and we will miss him so very much. Oswald, we love you so very much and will see you again. ~ Wendy & Kathleen

Rooby (Shodo N Shoobedo)
June 27, 2001 - December 28, 2015
Robby, my first Greyhound, came home on a stormy New Year’s Eve when she was 8 1/2 years old. She became a most wonderful, patient, and loving companion. She quickly made herself comfortable in a corner of the couch with a soft fluffy blanket. The blanket was her favorite so when it was time to launder it, she would follow it to the washer and later from the dryer back to the couch. Rooby loved new adventures and car rides, especially going to the area that has walking and horseback riding trails. We'd walk across an old wood bridge, through blooming orange trees, and along a creek. Then we would look in the pools of water for tadpoles. One occasion, going by the dog park, people on the small dog side invited her in and left to sit on the benches outside. They had never seen a Grey and enjoyed watching this unique hound, who looked like a deer, run and play. She accompanied me to stores, restaurants, church, festivals, meetings, and M&Gs. She was a friend who was welcomed into other’s homes and recognized around town from her pictures in the newspaper. I smile when remembering this dainty lady, with the sparkling water drops on top of her nose and clicking her teeth four times after she drinks. She loved leaping from behind the old incinerator in the yard to play, chasing her fuzzy ball across the living room, and snuggling on the bed with me. When all is silent, there are times I still hear the echo of her chirping, rooing, and talking. My niece brought a rose bush we call the “ Rooby Rose”. It has pink and white flowers to honor her beauty, grace, and love. ~ Susan

Nikki (Koyote Rikki)
March 01, 2008 - July 21, 2015
Nikki started retirement with her littermate Reba at Cathy Kiburtz' home, until she called and asked if we could foster her as Cathy needed the immediate space for a broken legged hound. I quickly brought her to my home and she settled right in with our two hounds. An hour after she arrived I felt this nudge at my elbow while I was working at my office desk, and without looking and thinking it was one of my own hounds, I obliged the nudge with an ear and neck scratching. I was stunned when I looked and saw it was the new foster hound giving me "that look" that said volumes and from that moment she was my girl. Nikki was one of the sweetest souls full of joy, but her life with us was too short. We miss her deeply. ~ Samanthe

Georgia
September 10, 2002 - May 2, 2015
When I met Georgia, it was love at first sight, like we both said, "Oh, there are you are. I've been waiting for you!" After five years on the track and 140 races, she greeted every morning with joy. For Georgia, every day was new chance to experience life to the fullest. Her helicopter tail never stopped wagging and her big, beautiful eyes reached down deep into my soul to remind me that every day is a gift and a chance to start again. She loved walks, and would prance with pride as we strolled down the street. Her favorite toy was pink bunny my mom gave her for Easter, and she was rarely with out it, even when it was nothing more than a threadbare, unrecognizable, pink cloth. Most of all, she loved bedtime. I would sing lullabies to her, as she fought sleep for just for a little more time together. Forever wouldn't have been enough time, my sweet Georgia Peach. ~ Lisa

Lucius (Luke)
March 25, 2008 - January 2, 2015
Lucius is Latin for light, and Lucius certainly lit up our home as well as the BARK Therapy Dog and GreySave M&G events he attended. Luke was a big guy, almost 32 inches at the shoulder, with a radiating personality every bit as big as his body. This gave rise to his nicknames “Luke-a-duke” and “The Luke of Hazard.” He loved affection, was as playful as a young pup, and firmly believed that everyone in the world wanted to be his friend. Both of his “go-funny” ears generally flopped to the same side giving him a comical look that often brought a laugh, especially when he would cock his head to listen to someone speaking to him. Luke was only six when we lost him to a very aggressive and painful form of bone cancer. Although Luke was part of our family for just over four years, the hole he leaves in our hearts is as big as this big boy himself. ~ Jim & Bonnie

Dyra Straits
November 16, 2005 - October 2014
Dyra was our first Greysave hound. Within a week of contacting Greysave, we got the call to meet two potential hounds. Off we went to a Meet & Greet hosted by Judy Calame, who was fostering Dyra. When we arrived, several hounds were circling around the pen and suddenly Dyra saw Steve and raced over to him rooing loudly. Judy looked at me and said: " He's just been chosen by Dyra, you know." The rest was history. She always loved Steve the best. Dyra had great patience with all the foster hounds that came into our home. She was a very vocal personality, but that made her guy love her all the more. ~ Samanthe & Steve

Apollo aka Paul
April 28 2003 - April 15 2014
Paul was my first grey. A big, happy, handsome boy, he loved everyone and everything. His personality was larger than life, and he never missed an opportunity to show off his silly side. An expert roacher, true smiler and never-ending snuggle bug, Paul filled my life and my heart with happiness and love. He was my patient and steady teacher, my confidant and my healer. He lived for his walks, and to watch him run was nothing short of grace and beauty in motion. Thank you, sweet, sweet boy for spending your years on earth with me. ~ Lisa
