GreySave's New Mission - Transport Partnerships
In December '20 all of the greyhound tracks in Florida closed for business. Florida had more tracks than all the other states combined and when they closed, it left significantly fewer places where greyhounds could race. Today there are only 3 full time tracks in the US and one seasonal track. However, there is a track just south of the US and Mexico border that runs National Greyhound Association (NGA) registered dogs. It is the Caliente Greyhound Race Track. As you would guess, when the US tracks closed, many dogs moved to Caliente to race. That track's number of greyhounds nearly doubled in just a few months. Prior to this migration, the SO CA adoption groups that took in retired greyhounds from Caliente had a pattern of how they operated based on the number of greys at that track, kennel operator connections, and seasonal changes. This pattern had been consistent for years but then Covid-19 hit, the border crossing became more difficult and the number of greyhounds racing and retiring changed. All of a sudden there was more pressure the So CA groups to up their game and find new solutions!
For years GreySave brought home and adopted 100 to 120 dogs a year but 2021 was not going to be business as usual. Early in '21 we realized that there was going to be a problem with capacity since so many dogs were retiring out. So we reached out to other NGA Recommended greyhound groups that we knew had adoption policies like ours and a history of great greyhound care. We were especially interested in adoption groups that had the capacity to take in broken leg greyhounds, along with healthy hounds, and that were within a decent travel distance for transport. Our first, and probably closest adoption partner was Greyhound Pets of Arizona in Clarkdale/Scottsdale AZ. By mid year they had taken in 30 dogs including quite a few of them that were injured. Since those early days and as greyhound retirements continued to grow at Caliente we shared dogs with six other greyhound adoption groups.
Our list of hounds - Since several greyhound groups have been getting greyhounds through us we wanted to make sure that we were being transparent with this process so we have put together a list of the greys we brought back to the states and identified the group that has them. We did this because some of the groups we worked with did not have the website capabilities we have and some didn't post to Greyhound Data. This list also helps people who were looking for dogs from their Florida days or even from the dogs farms. All dogs on the list without a year listed were brought back to the US in '21 and we recently added the '22 for the current years dogs. Additionally, we have put these dogs up on Greyhound data listing the group who took in the hounds.
