GreySave Greyhounds Who Have Crossed Over

FloraGreySave Name: Flora
Racing Name:
Florida Fun Girl
Age: 3
Crossing Over Date: October 29, 2011
Sex
: F Color: Brindle

Flora passed over suddenly and unexpectedly in her foster home. She was a charming brindle girl that tried to fool her foster parents by being quiet and reserved the first few days in their home. Then when she got the taste of the good life, she decided to show her true colors. We called her Floradorable--because she was just a charmer. Happy and flirtatious, she kissed freely. She loved toys and especially enjoyed carrying them outside for us to retrieve. She had us well trained. She lived with two greys and a galgo, and got along well with all of them.

ContessaAdopted Name: Contessa
Adoptive Family: Gaye Goodwin
GreySave Name: Contessa
Racing Name: Astro Duck
Birthdate: January 11, 2002
Crossing Over Date: March 5, 2011
Sex: F Color: Brindle

Contessa passed over the Rainbow Bridge in the loving arms of her human Mom, March 5, 2011, after a five month struggle with osteosarcoma. She was calm and fearless, a contessa-like regal girl to the end.

Marco PoloAdopted Name: Marco Polo
Adoptive Family:
Nancy Sharp
GreySave Name:
Stinger
Racing Name:
Rufus Scrimgeour
Birthdate:
July 2004
Crossing Over Date:
October 5, 2010
Sex:
M Color: Black

Marco was an exceptionally beautiful, big, black hound with tuxedo markings. He was drawn to people and other big dogs or even to small, yappy dogs at Meet & Greets. He loved going twice a month to Meet & Greets, meeting people at the store entrance. He loved to lean on people, just waiting for an occasional pat on the head or body rubs. When mom came home from work he would be waiting at the garage door with his long white tail swinging in the air. He was always a happy, carefree hound.

His mom still smiles when she remembers him circling her bed with his white tipped tail swinging in the air which appeared to look like a moving periscope. He had to pass his alpha sister Kyra to get to his bed and that was sometimes a challenge to get past her. If he was a big, brave boy that day he could walk pass her but other times he had to whine so his mom would get out of bed and escort him safely pass Kyra to get to his bed. What a "woose" he was, but that is what made Marco a very special hound. He was one in a million! Marco liked his stuffies and carried them around but never destroyed them. He loved to rest his head on them or place them next to his body. How lucky we were to have him in our home.

Kyra, his greyhound sister, Baron, his backyard buddy, and his mom will sorely miss his sweet and kind personality. He was a gentle soul with love for everyone who met him. His life was short for a greyhound but he left wonderful memories which will last a lifetime. He thrived and blossomed in his forever home and now he is playing and exploring on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

MindenAdopted Name: Minden
Adoptive Family:
Joel and Dianna Damir
GreySave Name:
Minden
Racing Name: Mark of Success
Birthdate: June 16, 2005
Crossing Over Date: April, 2010
Sex: F Color: Fawn

We knew Minden was perfect for us when she greeted us in such a happy and ladylike manner. Her heart knew that she was just right for us too and she had to let us know. Throughout our first meeting she kept her pretty face on my lap as I stroked her soft ears. A few days later she came home and nestled right into our hearts. Minden had been shuffled around a bit before finding her way to us and once her soul knew that it had found home, her work on this realm was finished. Our sweet Min will find us again and we’ll gently rub those velvety ears.

ClassyGreySave Name: Classy
Racing Name:
Classy AZ Ziyi
Birthdate: 2006
Crossing Over Date: November 23, 2010
Sex: F Color: Brindle

Classy died from complications following her spay operation. In the brief time that they had her, her foster family came to care for her deeply. Even though her time in retirement was very short, she at least had the chance to see what it was like to be a pampered pet.

Greyhound Friends of GreySave

AlexanderAdopted Name: Alexander the Greythound
Adoptive Family
: Bonnie and Jim Jeffers
Racing Name:
N/A
Birthdate: July or August 1999
Crossing Over Date: May 2, 2010
Sex: M Color: Brindle

Alexander came to us when animal control found him running the streets of Chino, California. He was only 32 lbs.; even the blood vessels could be traced under his thin skin. He was also covered with mange. The Humane Society vet called us to say, "We think we have a Greyhound, but he probably won’t live. Do you want to come get him?" That was Christmas week 1999, thus giving rise to his processing name of Y2K Bug. After months of helping him rehabilitate physically and emotionally, we decided to officially adopt him. He was still so small that we thought he needed a big name (and of course it had to have an ancient theme), thus "Alexander the Greythound." His nickname, however, always remained "Little Bug."

On May 2, 2010, we had to let Alexander go due to a tumor on the brain. He was almost 12. Alexander’s little body never grew into his big ears and big feet. He walked like a clown in big shoes and looked like the flying nun with his ears sticking out on both sides. One friend always called him Peter Pan because he looked like a puppy most of his life.

GracieAdopted Name: Gracie
Adoptive Family
: Marc Patton family
Racing Name:
Parlor Trick
Birthdate: August, 2002
Crossing Over Date: September 16, 2010
Sex: F Color: White

Gracie was 3 years old when we adopted her. My wife picked her out of the greys available for adoption because her temperament was a lot like her own: shy and reserved on the outside, but with a strong will and determination inside. She was our first dog. She brought us joy and became a big part of our lives. She came down with bone cancer in her left rear leg. Even though it must have been very painful for her these last couple of months, she still wanted to go out on her daily walks. At first she limped; then later she hopped on her good rear leg. I was worried about her hurting herself so I began to carry her over curbs and across streets that we had to cross on our walks. She loved smelling her "spots" along our walks and she carried on as best as she could until the end, even though her leg was swollen and painful. I miss our walks. Our house seems eerily quiet and foreign to me since her passing. We were lucky to have had her.

SophieAdopted Name: Sophie
Adoptive Family
: Ally and Neil Bolour
Racing Name:

Birthdate: 2001
Crossing Over Date: September 11, 2010
Sex: F Color: Fawn

Sophie joined our family in November 2004. She was just over 3 years old. Very shy and scared. We promised her that our home would be her forever home. After a while, she believed us and started protecting our home. She became an alpha dog and watched over another Grey we adopted six months later. She was the boss, but she was also full of love. The first time I saw her run in the park, I was mesmerized. It was like seeing a divine being. She left us on September 11, 2010. She died in my arms in her forever home. We kept our promise to her.

JasmineAdopted Name: Jasmine
Adoptive Family
: Freddie Sainz
Racing Name:
Amy's Jasmine
Birthdate: May 1, 2000
Crossing Over Date: November 21, 2011
Sex: F Color: Blue Brindle

Jasmine didn’t race long and was in two homes before she graced our family less than a year ago. Although not from GreySave, she bonded with Kadan, her GreySave brother. Jasmine and Kadan attended the GreySave picnic this October (2011). They loved playing together, and were always a team for getting attention especially when company came to the house. We are really going to miss her. She is now racing to Rainbow Bridge. I didn’t have her long, but loved her deeply. They take a bit of our heart each time we lose one, don’t they. Love you sweetie!

AngelinaAdopted Name: Angelina
Adoptive Family
: Freddie Sainz
Racing Name:
Wig Wam Angelina
Birthdate: March 21, 1997
Crossing Over Date: August 15, 2010
Sex: F Color: Fawn

Angelina was the most beautiful blonde fawn girl from Wig Wam Angela Dam and Buzz Around Sire, born in March 1997 with two brothers and one sister. She ran all five years, finishing her racing at Yuma. She was going to be used for stud purposes, but she broke her hock in her final race. She was stuck in a kennel for several months with no medical care. I had just lost my 13 year old Gina, when I saw Angelina at our rescue group’s Christmas gathering.  She had just been rescued from the track by one of our members who literally took the needle out of the hand of the track vet and said " I’m going to a Christmas party and I’m sure I can find a home for her." I adopted her without even having her cat tested after I received the biggest kiss ever. Yes–it was love at first kiss.

I have had many greyhounds over the years, but Angelina was the most perfect and regal one ever. Her leg never could be fixed and she limped and eventually wore a boot, but she loved her walks and loved her adoptive two brothers and sister.  She had the funniest habit of grabbing a toy before every meal and jumping around like a lunatic--just what she was doing on a Sunday when without any warning her leg snapped and she screamed. I knew it was the dreaded Osteo without even being told. I know she is at Rainbow Bridge with the other brothers and sisters we’ve lost – run free Angelina!!

AntonyAdopted Name: Antony
Adoptive Family
: Jim and Bonnie Jeffers
Racing Name:
FMC There Goes
Birthdate: April 26, 1996
Crossing Over Date: June 1, 2010
Sex: M Color: Black

Antony was proof that a positive attitude about life can help overcome just about any difficulty. He came off the track at age two with one eye that didn't move, a broken eardrum and an ear muscle damaged. He regained his sight and hearing, but always had one ear stuck upright in an endearing "one ear salute." At age eight he developed cancer and was given two weeks to live, but he lived six more years. Our vet called him the Energizer Bunny. In his last year he lost his hearing and became less steady on his feet. But Antony never ceased to play, to enjoy life, and to love every person and animal he met.

He was a favorite at Meet & Greets, where he would stand next to a person, waiting to be petted, then lean against them as they petted him. Many went away feeling that they had made a special connection with a greyhound. Shortly before he crossed over, a neighbor whose older dog was very ill asked if Antony could come over to help perk the dog up. The owner was sitting on the ground next to her dog, crying. Antony leaned across her chest and put his head on her shoulder in the best doggie hug I’ve ever seen. He then lay down next to the dog to comfort her. As it became clear that the dog wasn’t going to make it, the owner again began to sob; Antony reached out his paw and gently placed it on her knee. We greatly miss him, but feel blessed to have been Antony’s "parents."

CleoAdopted Name: Cleopatra (Cleo)
Adoptive Family:
Jim and Bonnie Jeffers
Racing Name:
Coldwater Blush
Birthdate: June 1, 1994
Crossing Over Date: August 15, 2008
Sex: F Color: Red fawn

Cleo was barely two years old when she became our first foster greyhound, and then when we flunked "Fostering 101" our first adopted greyhound. She then became our assistant foster trainer, and over the next 12 years helping 76 greys make the transition from track to couch. She was a calming, reassuring influence on confused track dogs. We have many photos of her tolerating fosters who curled up next to her for security. She was the farthest thing from an Alpha dog, so all the fosters knew they were safe with her. She was a generally reserved girl, but she clearly loved life and her pack. We fondly recall being woken up at 3 am, a week or so after she came off the track, because she had just discovered the joy of playing with toys. She clearly enjoyed life up till the last few days. Here's to Cleo, who did as much for greyhound adoption in her way as just about any other hound.
