Our Greyhounds
OUR GREYHOUNDS
Our Available hounds
Udate January 2024. So Far in 2023 and early 2024 GreySave has brought in 115 greyhounds from the Caliente track located in Tijuana. This is quite a few more we have brought across the border then in the last few years and the most recent group of 57 hounds we brought is because the Caliente track has gone from a 7 day racing schedule to just two days. However, there is still a significant population of greyhounds still racing there. And as they retire, we hope to some of them from the kennel operators and into foster and then Forever homes.
We are still taking in and processing a limited number of applications for adopters in the souther CA area and placing greyhounds as we get a match for them. We do give priority to our current adopters and prior greyhound adopters from other groups but we still do place greyhounds with people with medium to large dog experience and a loving heart. It just may take some time to get a match. As the track runs with fewer dogs running more races many of the greyhounds we are bringing in have been injured or are older, maybe 4 or 5 years old but that is the reality. Both the injured hounds and the older ones make qreyt companions as the prior injured ones have been in constant care and contact with their foster homes and the older ones are settled and ready to be a couch potato. If you are a prior GreySave adopter, the best thing you can do is call your adoption representative or a Board member. If you are new to GreySave put in an application. An Adoption representative will contact you and work with you to see what they can do to get you a greyhound. Our contact listing is at Contact US at https://www.greysave.org/contact-us.html It may take some time and has a lot to do with your personal and housing situation and the hounds we have available at the time. Please note like most greyhound groups we are not placing greys outside the area where we can support the adoption. We turn down many out of area applicants for this reason. Also there is not a large pool of greyhounds that are cat tolerant but we do get some. We do not adopt to people with in/outdoor cats or small yappy dogs. The most successful adopters are prior adopters, without a cat looking for a mate for their current greyhound. Another group of people that do well getting a greyhound are those that are willing to Foster to Adopt a hound. Just note that you will foster or foster on your application. Our goal still is always a match that's great for both dog and family. Please allow us to help you find the best greyhound for you. We've found that people who choose a dog based on a photo and brief profile such as those below often don't end up with the best dog for their lifestyle and family. So rather than let adopters pick the dog they want from these profiles, our adoption representatives use all the information we have on each dog to help adopters find just the right dog. Some of the dogs below are ready for adoption, some that are not yet ready and may be listed with a future date when they should be available, while others are being prepared for adoption but we don't know for sure when they will be ready. "Adoption Pending" dogs are about to be adopted. "Foster to Adopt" are dogs that their foster homes will be adopting as participants to our Foster to Adopt program. It is our practice not to list a dog as adoption pending until after they have had their surgery and we have a firm commitment for an approved adopter. The website is updated frequently at least weekly so most of the information is quite recent. The bottom of this page explains how we rate a dog's small dog or cat tolerance. GreySave, like most greyhound adoption groups, has a policy of not adopting to families with children 6 years-old or younger. We reluctantly adopted that policy after several greys came back to us a bit worse for the experience. We don't believe that, by their nature and speed, greyhounds are not suitable for young families but that they require a bit more structure and a safety net that may not be the best fit in a busy child focused household. For more information on young children and greyhounds, see the articles at http://www.greysave.org/children--greys.html If you are interested in adopting a greyhound, complete the adoption application and an adoption representative will be in touch regarding the process. For a list of greyhounds that have been recently adopted and where they live see the Recent Adoptees page. |

Alexa - Available for adoption
Racing Name: Of All Times
Age: 4.1 Sex: F Color: Dk Bdl
Homecoming Ht: 26.25 - Wt: 50.2
Medium dog - Y, Small dog - Y, Cat tolerant -N
Alexa is a petite and gentle Greyhound seeking a loving home where she can continue to blossom into the incredible companion she is. Her favorite foods are anything salmon, turkey, or peanut butter flavored.
Like most greyhounds, She is a laid-back dog and a proper couch potato, content to spend most of her day lounging and napping. However, when it's time for a walk or run outside, she comes alive! Her brindle coat grabs the attention of neighbors during walks. She can enjoy walks and/or runs of 1-2 miles at a time, and if she has a canine companion to run with, she's even more motivated to go the extra mile.
Alexa thrives in social environments. Her tail wags the most when with other dogs, both big & small. She lives in an apartment and has had no accidents, quickly learning her designated potty break spot. She is also comfortable using stairs and can easily navigate a multi-level home. While Alexa is perfectly content to relax at home, she does experience separation anxiety when left alone. Her foster is working with her daily to increase the time she is comfortable alone. However, she is fine when another dog or any human is home with her. She loves companionship and would thrive in a home where she is not left alone for extended periods.
If you are looking for a gentle, loving, and social companion, Alexa is the perfect dog. She is a true gem who will bring joy and companionship to your life.

Cedric - Available for Adoption
Racing Name: Foolish Oliver
Age: 10 Sex: M Color: Brindle
Medium dog - Y, Small dog - Y, Cat tolerant -N
(photo and testing from 6 years ago)
Cedric is returning to Greysave as both the new resident toddler and his diva greyhound sister have been stressing him out considerably. He would be okay as an only dog if he wasn’t alone all day or he would do well with another laidback medium to large size canine companion. Cedric cannot live with cats, and if he is in the presence of a high energy dog, his prey drive will kick in. A calm environment would be best, and if children are in the family, then 7 years and older would be ideal.
He can be a timid dog who startles easily with loud noises and sudden movements. He typically does not like his personal space to be invaded and will growl and/or snap if you get too close to him while he is on his bed or lying down. Over the years, he has become more comfortable with closer proximity to us and accepts our hugs and kisses, but exercise caution when you first get to know him.
Cedric will do anything for food, and he will follow you around to remind you of mealtimes. He does demonstrate food guarding, so distraction is key if you need to take something out of his mouth or away from him. Place food in the middle of the table or on a higher counter because Cedric will swipe things that are within his snoot’s range.
He receives three meals a day with a mixture of kibble and raw meat with a poultry foot for dessert after dinner, but as long as Cedric is fed, he will be content. He is rather snobby about water as it MUST be flavored. Even if it is a very hot day, he will refuse to drink water unless there is something else mixed with it. We typically soak his food with water, so he gets some hydration.
Cedric enjoys walks and lounging around and has never expressed interest in toys unless there is food involved like a snuffle mat or a food filled Kong. He walks well on a leash, but can get triggered and start barking if he sees large, animated dogs. He stays off furniture and has always used a dog door, but should be okay as long as he is taken out regularly if he doesn’t have access to a door. He currently lives in a single level home, but he can definitely learn how to do stairs if needed.
We are incredibly sad for Cedric to leave our family, but he deserves to live out his golden years in a peaceful home sans unpredictable toddler and bossy sister. We have every confidence that he will find a loving home that he will thrive and blossom in.

Gadot - Available for Adoption
Age: 8.25 Sex: F Color: Brindle
Medium dog - TBD, Small dog - TBD, Cat tolerant -TBD
Gadot has come to us through no fault of her own. Her mom is relocating out of the country, and she needs a new forever home. Godot never raced, but she loves to run and chase her foster brother and sister in the yard. And when her brother hears a critter noise outside at night, Godot is right at his heels to investigate. She sleeps well and night and LOVES to go for walks. Even a move towards the leashes brings her to her feet in excitement. She is very friendly, but shy. Once she gets to know you, she's a cuddler ,but she's a bit hesitant at first and takes a while to warm up. New things make her nervous, even to eating out of a new dish (especially if it MOVES while she's eating!) Godot is a beautiful little girl who would need another grey in her new home, and a family that is not gone all day. Small kids are not her favorite, only because they move quickly, which makes her nervous. It is not yet known how she feels about small dogs, but she is not reactive on a walk, noticing squirrels and cats, but not reacting strongly. Godot would make a greyt addition to a home with an established grey to make her feel safe. And then she'll be ready to give some first class snuggles to her new family!

Stacey - Available for Adoption
Racing Name: WW Stayin Alive
Age: 4.9 Sex: F Color: Red Fawn
Homecoming Ht: 25.5 Wt:59.1
Medium dog - Y, Small dog - N, Cat tolerant - TBD
At only 59 pounds, Stacey is both dainty and delightful. She shares her foster home with two female greyhounds and they all get along very well.
Stacey walks very well on the leash and will both pee and poop when out for a walk. Although she loves to walk with the pack, she is also happy to be the only dog on the walk. She thoroughly enjoys meeting all the neighbors and greats everyone enthusiastically. She alerts and becomes very interested when she spots a cat, small dog, or squirrel. However, she does not pull or jump and keeps all four feet on the ground as she stares at these “aliens.”
Stacey does not get on the furniture and prefers her bed on the floor. She likes her X-pen and is happy to retreat there to crunch up a few dog biscuits. A few attempts to chew on the corners of furniture have been made but she responds and pays attention to a sharp “No.”
Her appetite is healthy and she respects the other dogs at meal times. So far, she has only made a few attempts to steal human food and again understands a sharp “No.”
Stacey recently discovered the dog in the mirror and had lots of fun trying to play with it. Toys are mostly ignored but somedays she likes to play with a tennis ball. Zoom meetings, with all the voices, were a source of fascination for her. She insisted on checking out the computer and shoving her face into the screen. It was hilarious and a good meeting disrupter. The novelty has since worn off for her.
Stacey is happy to be left home alone while the other dogs are walked and has not shown any separation anxiety. She should be suitable for a variety of home environments, either as an only dog or with the company of a fellow canine.

Medium dog - Y, Small dog -Y, Cat tolerant - N
Meg is shy, but very petite and sweet dog. She is initially quite reserved in new situations but once she gets comfortable she has a sweet, affectionate, and spunky personality. She was very quick to learn about and appreciate treats and dog toys in her retirement as well as a soft beds and walks. Meg is very interested in small dogs on walks and is learning not to pull hard on the leash when she sees small dogs. Meg is also very smart and has learned the household routines rapidly. She gets on well with the other greyhounds in the household as long as they respect her personal space.

Suri - Available for Adoption
Racing Name: WW Certainly
Age: 4.7 Sex: F Color: Dk Brindle
Homecoming Ht: 27 Wt:56
Medium dog - Y, Small dog - N, Cat tolerant - N
Suri is lots of sweetness and curiosity bundled up in the cutest little frame— with four white socks and a matching cotton tipped tail. She’s quite sociable and enjoys meeting new people, especially after they’ve complimented her striking appearance.
Despite having raced 259 times, she has settled into couch potato life seamlessly. She loves car rides, long scritch sessions, bounding up and down stairs, playing and cuddling with stuffies, and going on walks with our female grey. She walks wonderfully on leash, whether alone or with another dog. Suri loves to jump for squirrels and food! But she is respectful and will not put paws on you (though she will need a high fence if she is off-leash). Additionally, she has shown some promise for making an okay guard dog, but in true greyhound fashion, the conditions must be just right to get an alert bark.
While she enjoys the company of our grey, she prefers to learn the ropes of retirement on her own and would do well as an only dog. She is highly trainable between her passion for food and praise, and will make a wonderful addition to any household where someone is home most of the time.

Medium dog - Y, Small dog - Y, Cat tolerant - Y
Toby is a sweet darling little girl who will actually “sit” like a regular dog! She loves cuddling and is very affectionate. She is food motivated and is aware things are on the counter, but her petite stature makes it difficult for her to successfully purloin your pork loin. She tugs a bit on walks, but is improving, and gets along with all the dogs and cats she meets on walks. About the only thing she doesn't do well with is riding in cars; she stays calm, but has a very sensitive stomach.

Issac is a sweet Velcro dog. He loves being around his humans and will follow you anywhere you go. He is very food driven and makes attempts to scout the kitchen counters anytime someone is there. He takes corrections very well, so a firm “no” is all that’s needed to correct his behavior. He is still learning how to navigate the staircase. But he is smart and will eventually master it. He gets along very well with our senior female Grey. He loves running errands with us and gets super excited when he receives attention from strangers.

Miranda - Adopted and Living in Glendale
Racing Name: KD's Miranda
Age: 3.9 Sex: F Color: Red
Homecoming Ht: 27.5 Wt: 61.0
Medium dog - Y, Small dog - N, Cat tolerant - N
Miranda is a good fit in our pack of two other greyhounds in our *one-story home. She is not food aggressive and eats in her own space with the two other dogs in close proximity.
She fits in with other greyhounds whom we walk with on Sundays (up to 18 hounds). She has a curiosity of smaller animals, and non-greyhound dogs; not certain if it's high prey drive. Small, calm children are fine with her. She is cautious but not aggressive when meeting new people. She is confident and may be a ok as an "only" dog.
Miranda walks well on leash by herself and doesn't pull you off balance. Sometimes she will follow too closely as you walk in the house and may cause a trip-up. *Stairs are do-able for her minimal practice on the kiddie park apparatus. She is accustomed to daily walks along a busy street and through a pond/park area with geese and ducks without issue.
Miranda is extremely affectionate. While not allowed on furniture, she snuggles anyone floor level, and on any of many dog beds throughout our home. She prefers to sleep in one of two crates in our bedroom rather than a dog bed. Crate doors are not shut.
She is learning manners. She is not tall enough to see what's on a counter, so she'll put her paws up to confirm what's up. Miranda's learned boundaries, no kitchen access allowed. She won't enter even if the access gate is ajar. Miranda has access to a large doggie door (with no flap) and easily uses it.

Tik Tok - Adopted and living in Palm Springs
Racing Name: Tik Tok Tik Toc
Age: 4.5 Sex: MColor: White & Black
Homecoming Ht: 30.0 Wt: 73.6
Medium dog - Y, Small dog -W, Cat tolerant - N
Tik Tok is a tall and gentle grey, who is very fond of humans! He will follow you around waiting for you to pet him, and will not walk away until you stop. He melts in your arms, and holds his head high on walks, so that you (or at least ME, at 5’9”) can just reach your hand down and pat his head. He is learning to play with toys (particularly likes the squeaky ones) and gets along well with the other greys in the house (including foster Chase), paying appropriate homage and respect to HRH Annie.
Tik Tok apparently has epicurean tendencies, and will watch intently when food is getting prepared, eaten, carried, put away, etc. If you leave a string cheese wrapper on the bedside table, or the lid to the pint of cream on the kitchen counter, he will remember it is there (because of course he watched you put it there), and will come back later to get it. He is slowly learning how to wait for other greys to be fed before he gets his, and that humans are also allowed to eat in peace.
Tik Tok walks well on a leash. He is constantly on the lookout for small animals, and while he will make the leash taut when he sees one, he does not pull or lunge to get it, at least at a fair distance. I would not consider him “high prey drive,” but definitely not cat tolerant. Aren’t many small dogs in the neighborhood to check more thoroughly.
Although he is very food motivated, he has no issues with food aggression (i’ve reached in to remove his food), resource guarding, or sleep startle. He has also earned his “How to Use the Dog Door” and “Helicopter Tail” certificates of achievement.
He can tolerate being alone for several hours, and could probably be an only dog if the family isn’t gone for extended periods of time (ie he gets his cuddling needs met).
Tik Tok would be a great dog for someone looking for a calm cuddler and/or a family with younger children (supervise them on walks).

Racing Name: Chasing History
Age: 3. 5 Sex: M Color: Red
Homecoming Ht: 29.0 Wt: 70.4
Medium dog - Y, Small dog -Y, Cat tolerant - N
Chase is a handsome big red boy with a sweet and calm demeanor. He lives with another foster (Tik Tok) and HRH Annie, and they all get along well. Chase is happy with letting the others be dominant, preferring to follow their lead or just take naps.
He walks well on a leash, and although he is very alert to other small animals, he doesn’t show high prey drive behavior from a distance. He also doesn’t show food aggression, resource guarding or sleep startle. He is still a bit “eager” when taking treats from your hand, especially if other dogs are around, but is getting better.
He was a bit timid at first, but has become confident when there are no humans, but the other greys are home. Chase enjoys cuddling, but will give a small growl if his boundaries are crossed (the only one i know if is he doesn’t like his legs being confined).
Chase has his “Dog Door“ and “Expressive Ears” certificates of achievement.
Because of his generally calm demeanor, Chase would be good for someone interested in a big dog that won’t knock you over and drag you along on a walk. He seems to appreciate the leadership of other greys and probably not good as an only, unless his humans are not gone too long.

Racing Name: Boisterous
Age: 3.5 Sex: M Color: Brindle
Homecoming Ht: 31 Wt: 76.5
Medium dog - TBD, Small dog TBD Cat tolerant - TBD
Three year old Bo is a handsome, energetic guy who is sure to turn heads while out on a walk. This big boy is a combination of good looks and gentle demeanor. Bo’s curiosity knows no bounds. Everything is new and exciting like sleeping in soft beds, rolling in the grass, or standing next to you to be petted and adored. Bo shares his home with two other greyhounds who have taught him to use the doggy door, climb stairs, and ignore the strange dog in the mirror.
This delightful fellow would do well with another dog to keep him company or someone who is home most of the time.

Buster is a sweetheart! He was so willing to learn about his new environment, took to the dog door within two days and is learning about his new human pack, who sleeps where, and who is coming and going. He’s very calm, and sweet, loves to be petted and roll on his back, and sleeps very deeply. He’s not at all nervous about doors, or narrow spaces - but will try and snag things from counters. He likes to be near a person but will sleep quite happily on his bed as long as he knows you are in the house and doesn’t need to follow you everywhere. Living up to his name, he does bump into things a bit, but loves his stuffies once in a while and even did his first zoomie yesterday. He is fascinated by squirrels but has learned to walk very nicely on the leash, especially well down the front stairs, learning to wait. He has a very reactive sleep startle, so we are careful with giving him his own sleep space, but we can see him becoming a very lovely companion. Slowly gaining weight. He hasn’t been introduced to any other dogs yet - though was rather startled and quite dominant over a small fluffy dog that was loose and ran over to us, so we’ll be careful about those future interactions. We adore him!

Racing Name: Slatex Murphy
Age: 5.0 Sex: M Color: White & Red
Homecoming Ht: 30 Wt: 70
Medium dog - Y, Small dog -N, Cat tolerant - N
Murphy is a delightful dog, who sits ALL the time, and seems to get along with just about everyone (unless they have a cat or squirrel in their pocket). He is a rabid eater, and fond of all types of treats, but he is very respectful of the resident dogs, and waits for them to go first. Murphy rides well in the car, and is getting better on a leash, though unusual noises and little furry things are still a distraction. He gets along very well with his two foster brothers, as well as the visiting pitt mix. He is crazy for toys, the squeakier the better, but so far shows no desire to destroy them. He also loves to carry his foster moms shoes to his bed, but has not shown an interest in in chewing them. Murphy is really an all around pretty perfect greyhound (with soulful eyes that follow you everywhere!), but he would need another canine buddy in the house. As it is, he is not very happy when his foster mom leaves, although after a few minutes, he will settle, and lay down with his foster brothers.

Explanation of the Med dog/Small dog/Cat Tolerance Listings
Nearly all greyhounds get along very well with dogs of medium size or larger, regardless of breed. But some do not get along with small, we mean very small dogs or cats. In the dog & cat tolerant listings above, the first letter refers to how we think the greyhound would do with medium sized dog, then small dogs and the third as to how we think they would do with cats. The listings above for the small dogs and cats are for the most part are based on how the greyhound tested when he first came off the track. Some listings have been adjusted as we've seen how he has done in his foster home. The medium dog listing is based on the greyhound's experience while they are in a foster home.
An "N" for small dogs and cats listing above means that, in our judgment, this dog is not suited to live with either small dogs (under 15 or 20 pounds) or a cats. A "W" listing in either category means that the greyhound, with proper training and supervision such as an experienced greyhound adopter could provide, could learn to live with small dogs or cats. A "Y" listing means that the greyhound with proper supervision initially should adapt quickly to life with your small dogs and cats. Quite a few of our dogs have lived in foster homes with indoor cats and because they have special credentials we reserve these hounds for families with cats. We don't test for tolerance for outside cats since all bets are off if a normally inside cat ran by a greyhound who has been trained to chase. A "TBD" listing usually means that the dog has not yet been tested.
