This is the fourth part of the series The Last Lap: From Their Track to Your Home. Read the other parts below:
Choosing Your New Greyhound
Making sure that the greyhound you adopt is the right
dog for your family and lifestyle is just as important to us as
it is to you.
Greyhound personality profiling
Our foster homes complete
a personality profile that gives us a good picture of each dog's
temperament, activity level, any quirks, special health needs if
any, and compatibility with animals and children of various ages.
State your wishes
The adoption application you complete gives you the
chance to specify what you're looking for specifically, if anything,
in a greyhound. It also gives us an idea of the kind of greyhound
that might be most compatible with the humans and critters in your
home.
Home visit
In response to your application, one of our adoption
representatives sets up a time to bring a greyhound or two to your
home and to talk with you about adopting a greyhound. She gives
you some tips for choosing the right dog that our adopters have
found to be very helpful. For example, we help you think about the
personalities of your current dog(s) and what new addition might
best fit in. She also looks for possible problems for a greyhound
in your home or yard (such as cactus plants that could harm a running
greyhound), and discusses possible ways to fix them.
Finding the right match
We
tell you about one or more dogs that seem to be a good match. Then
you can visit each dog in his or her foster home, where you can
get the best idea of how they will behave in your home once they've
settled in. Bring your other dog(s) along to meet him or her. If
it seems like a good match, sign the paperwork and take your dog
home. If not, we'll continue giving you options until you find the
right dog.

Once we receive your application,
we send it to the appropriate representative who makes an appointment
to talk and see your home. GreySave Adoption Representatives are
experienced greyhound owners and volunteers who know how to help
you make sure that a greyhound is right for you, and that you find
the right greyhound.
They will help you think about accommodations, if
any seem advisable, that could ensure your greyhound has a safe
and happy life in your home. They will suggest issues that you might
not have considered as you look for a new dog. Finally, because
it's often hard to express this on an application, they will be
sure that we have a good understanding of what you are looking for
in a greyhound.
The Last Leg of the Last Lap: Adopting Your New Greyhound
Now that your greyhound has been brought from the track, groomed and treated, and finally acclimated to home life in a foster home, and you and your Placement Representative have picked him or her out, he or she is ready for you to adopt. Go How to Adopt from GreySave to find out how you adopt your new greyhound.
