WAYS TO SUPPORT US: With A Direct Donation
Your donation to GreySave helps us transition prior racing greyhounds from their working life at the track to their new life as a treasured companion in their Forever Home. Since founding the group in 2006, GreySave has adopted out over 1,600 greyhounds. Annually we place between 100 and 120.
Background - GreySave gets most of our hounds from the Caliente race track in Tijuana Mexico where we believe that there are usually 500+ greyhounds in residence. These greyhounds were born and raised in the USA but transported to race at the Caliente track. Many have spent their entire racing life in Mexico and some have raced over 300 races and may be up to 6 years old. Others are very young and apparently did not get the concept of chasing a lure let alone racing. All the greyhounds that race in Mexico are American born, tattooed and registered through the National Greyhound Association in Kansas. We have done this for a long time, some of us for over 20 years and are sure that the greys of Caliente greatly welcome the opportunity to come back to the US for their retirement.
GreySave is non-political and a greyhound racing neutral adoption group. Business model - We do not have a kennel so 100% of our hounds live in foster homes that volunteer to house them. GreySave's main limit to adoptions is the number of foster homes we have available at any given time. Process - When the hounds stop racing AKA retire they are moved to a pet kennel at the track and cared for until GreySave or one of the other SO CA adoption groups goes across the border and brings them back to the US. We go to get hounds every 4 to 5 weeks or as frequently as we have open foster homes.
The Cost - In 2021, the cost for GreySave to bring home the greyhounds, care for all their medical transition; e.g. blood work, vaccinations, spay or neuter, much needed dental and microchip averaged $850+. However, our adoption fee is $350 a portion of our actual costs. We fund raise to cover the other hound costs. We try to keep the fee as affordable as we can since we feel that these are special hounds, that need very special adopters that understand greyhound have unique needs. As a large dog with thin skin they can be expensive to feed and care for. If you don't care for them in the way they need or maybe have become accustomed to they can be very expensive as they age. As part of our mission, GreySave takes back into the group any of our greys, plus those that have moved here if their adopters can no longer care for them. We will take them in, give them the care they need and get them a new Forever Home.
